CRP’s Center for Civil Rights Remedies joins civil rights groups in complaint vs. Wake County school policing policy

January 27, 2014

The Center for Civil Rights Remedies joined local advocates as well as several national civil rights groups in filing a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice on Wednesday, January 22, 2014.

The goal of the complaint is to spur the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate race- and disability-based claims that the Wake County, North Carolina school police’s use of force, interrogations, and denial of due process rights constitute systemic problems and civil rights violations having a disparate impact on Black students and students with disabilities. The police force’s unlawful use of these tactics to address routine minor school code violations results from inadequate training of school resource officers and inappropriate reliance on police by the school system.

Complainants assert systemic violations of students’ civil rights which denies them equal educational opportunity.
